You will have to be extremely decent when you visit temples in Sri Lanka. you must cover your knees and shoulders to visit them. This is the main things you need to keep in your mind while you visit temples in Sri Lanka. (Sleeveless or deep neck not acceptable)
- Headgear and footwear are not allowed inside the temple.
- ask permission before taking pictures and don’t turn your back to Buddha statues while you are taking photos.
- Show respect to the Buddhist monks and don’t try to shake your hands.
- Keep the silence when you are at the temple premises and do not smoke.
- The visitors are not allowed to touch Buddha statues and paintings.
- Inside of the temple is very silent and devotees observe religious rites, respect them, and do not disturb their prayers.
- The flowers which are kept at shrines as for offerings, never touch or smell them.
- Don’t try to feed monkeys at the temple premises.
Note – Buddha tattoos are not allowed in Sri Lanka and If you have, please ensure they are covered up everywhere in the Country. Especially when you visit temples in Sri Lanka.
Also, note topless bathing by females and Nudism is prohibited in Sri Lanka. Swimwear is not an accepted attire in public places.
